Vanilla Bun Bars Childhood Memories
|I was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where Bun Candy Bars were originally manufactured. Early on, Vanilla Bun Bars became my favorite candy bar by far. When I was in seventh grade, my family moved to Tennessee. I was crushed to discover, stores there did not carry Bun Bars. From that point on, every time we got together with family members from Ft. Wayne (grandparents, aunts and uncles) they all brought me a supply of Vanilla Bun Bars! Forty-five years later, my aunt still reminisces about my love for Vanilla Bun Bars. Needless to say, I was thrilled to find my old favorite still available on your site. Thanks for keeping the old favorites alive and available!|
In the late 1940's I was a young lad about 7 or 8 years old. Mr.
Sluss had only one store in the little community of Jesse, WV.,
population 225. My parents did some bartering during those days and
eggs were one of the products we traded for items from the store. I
can remember getting a Bun Candy Bar for one egg. It is amazing that
eggs were about 5 cents each then.
Maple was my favorite and Vanilla was my Moms' favorite. If we had
done our chores. cut the wood, milk the cow, take in some coal for the
cook stove, Mom would let us check the chicken nest to see if there
were any eggs and let us take them to Mr. Sluss and get a treat. If
there was only one egg I would get the Bun Candy and if I found two I
could get the Bun Candy and a Grapette or Double Cola.
