Choward's Violet Candy History:
The first introduction of the C Howard's brand mint line was in the early 1930's in a small loft on Broadway in New York City by Charles Howard. He was in search of a different flavored candy, which he certainly found.
A Violet flavored mints was his first confection. A square shaped candy with a strong and tasty violet flavor. He began selling the "Choward's Violet" in Manhattan right on the street corners. These soon became a big success.
Due to the success of the Violet mint next came a gum. Mr.. Howard's next item was a purple colored gum in tablet form similar to Chiclets. Once again this gum was the same
violet flavor. Mr.. Howard then named this gum "Choward's Scented Gum" which was also a huge success.
As the success of these two violet flavored treats grew so did the mint line. He also came out with a peppermint, spearmint and a tart little lemon mint all under the
Choward's name.
Elizabeth Juhase a long time valued employee of Charles Howard took over the company upon the death of Mr.. Howard. In the 1970's Elizabeth's nephews joined forces in running the company and run this company today.
In the beginning these nostalgic candies were sold only in New York, however now they are sold through out the United States, Puerto Rico and Bermuda. Choward's violet candies are also sold in old time candy stores as well as specialty stores. 75 years later the original line of Choward's Candy and Mints are still produced with the same quality of taste and flavor as introduced by Mr. Charles Howard himself. |
