History Of The Candy Cane
Candy canes are a traditional Christmas candy. They are as important to Christmas as Santa is. Can you imagine what Christmas would be like without candy canes ?

Candy Canes have been around for over 350 years, they were first used in Europe as a decoration for their Christmas trees. When these sweet treats were first available they were just plain white straight sticks of nothing but sugar.

It wasn't until the 1800's that Americans started using these sugar sticks as decorations for there Christmas Trees, still at that time they were plain white and it's believed that they didn't get there red strips until the 20th century.

There are many religious believes associated with the candy cane.

Part of the Christmas celebration at the Cologne Cathedral were pagents of living creches. In about 1670 the choirmaster there had sticks of candy bent into the shape of a shepherd’s crook and passed them out to children who attended the ceremonies. This became a popular tradition, and eventually the practice of passing out the sugar canes at living creche ceremonies spread throughout Europe. Many also believe that these J shaped candies were created in Jesus's name.

Some say the white of the candy cane represents the purity of Jesus and his virgin birth. There are also many theories as to how the candy sticks got their red strips.

• The bold red stripe represents God’s love.

• The three fine stripes are said by some to represent the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

• Others say they represent the blood spilled at the beating Jesus received at the hands of the Roman soldiers.

Candy canes not only taste good , but they also play a very big part in the Christmas traditions of the past.

Over they years there as been many changes to these candy sticks. From white candy sticks, to candy canes then to red stripes. Now you can get candy canes in a variety of different flavors.
