In the early days it was customary to take a basket full of seedlings to Eostre, who was the fertility goddess, she would bless the seeds in hopes of a good harvest season. Eostre always carried a basket of eggs according the the legend. Because of this legend Easter Baskets become the symbol of new life.
But how did the tradition of filling Easter Baskets with candy start ? This started way back when the German settlers arrived in the USA. They brought with them the German tradition of the Easter Hare. According to the legend the white hare would leave baskets full of goodies and eggs on doorsteps for kids to find and pig out on all the sweet treats.
Through out the years the white hare turned into the Easter Bunny, but still carried out the idea of giving Easter baskets filled full of chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, marshmallow eggs and other sweet treats many of which are in pastel colors to associate spring and the beginning of new life.
