Ferrara Pan Candy Memories: Summertime Sporting Sweets
*Crack* The familiar sound of the ball flying from the bat the dust billows up
from cleats digging in deep. The family and friends gathered cheering and
yelling, but something was missing. My hand instinctively burrows into my
pocket feeling for the cool metal coins within. Then I heard a noise, looking
past the third base dugout the old cherry wood shack was opening its front
window. It clicked up slow at first then the last half it made such a noise
flying up. The counter became apparent and just beyond the girls behind the
counter was a wall filled with treasure, concessions.
It was on! My friend braced himself and looked at me seeing who was going to
make the first move and as quick as I can I spun around with my feet hanging
over and I jump from the top of the short bleachers to the ground below. He was
stuck for a moment, just enough time to dust myself off and make a run for it,
all the while the change jingling away with each step. From behind the crowd
cheered, not caring what was going on I sprint forward, stumbling on a grassy
mound that sprang up out of no where with one thought in mind, I just had to get
there first.
I hear footsteps from all sides, I know I’m not the only one who saw. Running
so hard I put my hands in front of me to stop my momentum at the shack. Cherry
Clans, Alexander The Grapes, Lemonheads, little boxes with so many choices.
Throwing a handful or change up on the counter I smile and point, my friend just
getting in line, the one that formed behind me. Opening a random box and
dumping a few pieces into my mouth, the sour flavor puckering my lips I push
most of the boxes into my pockets, with the exception of one. Walking past my
friend and seeing his indignant glare I shake my almost full box, the rattling
noise letting him know I’ve already tasted sweet victory.
The word "pan" in the company name means that some of the candy they make is manufacturer using a "panned" process. This process involves building candy pieces from single grain, such as a grain of sugar, nuts or candy centers, then tossing them in revolving pans. While these pieces are being tossed the flavor, color and other candy ingredients are then added. This process continues until the pieces become the desired size. Once the size of the candy has been reached, the candy then gets a high polish with an edible vegetable wax, which gives it an attractive appearance.
The Ferrara Pan Company is known for their old time nostalgic candies. many of these are favorite candies from the 50's like the Boston Baked Beans, Lemon Heads, Jaw Busters and Red Hots. They also make great treats that the kids love today including the Chewy Lemon Heads and Friends and the Tropical flavors.
