Penny Candy Childhood Memories

In the early seventies i was a little girl in Whitehall Ny, i had one sibling who was three years older than me, my sister Missy. Missy made me mad! Cause she could do "big" girl stuff that i wasnt aloud, cause i was the baby. Missy and i agreed on somethings though our top two places in our small 70s town was JJ Newberrys department store and our number one was LOUIES! Louies was the most wonderful penny candy store that ever was!!! It was run by a little Jewish couple, though i dont remember her name i remember her but mostly i remember Louie. He was short for a man, had a big broad smile, he smelled of cinnamon, and my favorite thing was Louie was not only a great penny candy seller but he also adored the little red-headed girl that went into his store with her parents, ME! Louie always gave me extra for my money, he sure gave me my penny's worth, When i was five i would go there and tell Louie i could not wait til the day when i could ride my bike to his store just like Missy did. My favorite candy of Louies was gumdrops, barley lollipops in fantastic shapes like merry go round horses. My other favorites of Louies were the cocnut candies that had three flavors like neopolitan icecream, i also liked coconut bon bons, and rock candy, and a licorice mix that had candy coated licorice. Louie and his wife use to give me hard raspberry candies with a gooey center, i loved going to the penny candy store, it was our ritual there were 4 penny candy stores in my hometown then, and once a month or so my parents would take us to each one on the same evening, we would get a quaters wrth at each one and the final one in our trip would be Luies, he was a wonderful character from my childhood, and when i was about 5 and 1/2 he smiled just as wide as i did when i whent driving up on my bike fir the first time, so when i think of candy, i think of Louie...
