Old Time Candy Bars

Mr. Hershey had no idea what the chocolate bar would come to mean to the world. It took on a whole persona of it's own during World War II. This sweet little device was used as nourishment, for bartering, and of course, as a gift. In the postwar years of the fabulous 50's, the candy bar grew to new varieties and huge popularity as part of the luxuries earned and enjoyed by Americans during this time of great prosperity.

During the 60's, my Father would come home from work on occasion with a small paper bag which I knew was an assortment of candy bars. We all would get a pick from the bag, no peeking though. I got pretty good at feeling the size and shape of the different ones. Chunky bars were easy. The 7-up bars, which are a lot like the skybars were my favorites. After dinner we'd all take our pick and go set in front of the TV savoring this rare treat. There were usually a couple of extra Charleston chews that we would throw in the freezer for cracking up at a later time. My Mother always loved the Bun bars, Vanilla. She didn't have to pick though, Dad always made sure he got one just for her.
