My Milwaukee Raisins arrived and I can't stop eating them. Each vile-colored drop with its strange perfume taste is a joyous journey back to my childhood, back to those happy and free spirited times at the Uptown theater for matinees and a Duncan Yo Yo contest. There was to swimming the heat away at Hoyt Park Pool and then viewing all of the wondrous and realistic images created in the Milwaukee Museum's dioramas. Along with shopping sales at Gimbels, Boston Store and Schusters, the best shoes were always found at the Peacock Shoes just across the bridge on Wisconsin Avenue. For tired shoppers there was lunch ready and waiting at Holoway House Cafeteria or for a special dinner Maders and The Schwabenhof were tops. Ribs? Nothing better in this world than Pictch's. It was all good, all happy memories now triggered by that penny candy that one little penny would buy so much of. To have those carefree days back requires nothing for me more than popping a candy raisin into my mouth as I did fifty-five years ago and closing my eyes, three bites on a gum drop raisin and like Dorothy I am right back home with all of my heart's desires.
